A  small tea shop in the state of Tamil Nadu has become an Global icon — Nellai Karupatti Coffee (NKC).  its journey from a simple idea to a successful brand. This is the story of Murali, a young boy from the village of Thirunelveli, who dreamt big and turned his passion into a thriving business.

 

The Humble Beginning

Murali, a small-town boy, moved to Chennai to pursue his studies. After finishing his education, he landed a job as an assistant director in the film industry. But despite his success, something was missing. Every time he had a break, he found himself standing outside a local tea shop, sipping tea and thinking about his future. Additionally, it’s important to note that composite marks, which combine geographic names with other elements, are generally excluded from the scope of Section 9(1)(b). Even if part of the mark consists of elements that serve to indicate geographical origin, the entire composite mark may still be eligible for registration, provided it has acquired distinctiveness and is not merely descriptive of the geographic origin. In Murali’s case, Nellai Karupatti Coffee did not just represent a location; it had come to represent quality, tradition, and authenticity. Thanks to its distinctiveness and the loyal customer base it had built over the years, Murali was able to register the trademark successfully.
